The World Association of Spades (WAOS)

The World Association of Spades (WAOS) is committed to promoting competitive card play in a safe, professional, and welcoming environment. We strive to connect Spades enthusiasts nationwide — and globally — through the timeless enjoyment of this intellectually demanding and socially enriching game.

Our Story

WAOS was founded in 2007 by William “Bum” Beard, inspired by his late father, William Matthew DeBarr Jr., affectionately known as “Coach” DeBarr. After a successful engineering career, William sought deeper meaning through service and connection. He found that passion in Spades — a strategic card game that has connected generations, genders, and backgrounds alike. What began as a vision to create a broader platform for community engagement has since evolved into a full-fledged league, offering monthly competitions, annual tournaments, and scholarship support.
